Fermentation Operator

Main Functions

The fermentation operator will join a process & product development team and work in the domain of industrial microbiology and biotechnology, the cornerstone of the Lallemand different businesses. The selected candidate will report to the process lab Research Associate and the Senior R&D Manager, Lallemand Corporate R&D.  Key responsibilities include: operating a 20L bioreactor and all other equipment required for yeast post-fermentation processing and treatments on a daily basis, performing R&D activities by planning, organizing and executing experiments related to yeast fermentation and processing, optimization and scale-up, analyzing and reporting results verbally or in written format.  The operator will work in a dynamic team that requires efficient interactions and communication.  By assisting in different projects, the operator will have the opportunity to gain hands on experience and a better understanding of yeast physiology, yeast fermentation conditions and techniques under industrial conditions. Specific tasks associated with this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform various R&D activities and experiments
  • Conducting fermentation operations on a daily basis
  • Operate multiple high-tech equipment: bioreactor, separator, spray-dryer, fluidized bed dryer, filter-press, extruder, freeze-dryer etc.
  • Analyze and report fermentation/experiment results in written or oral format
  • Conduct a variety of lab QC analyses and technical procedures when required
  • Keep track of various maintenance needed on lab equipment and bioreactors
  • Help to maintain laboratory inventory of chemicals and consumables
  • Keep a clean and safe environment in the lab

Technical skills


  • Technical or BSc degree in Laboratory technique, Biotechnology, Biology, Microbiology or any relevant discipline
  • Good communication skill
  • Relevant computer skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc).
  • Accuracy and attention to details
  • Logical and methodical approach to problem solving

An asset

  • Relevant laboratory experience
  • Experience in yeast fermentation and processing
  • Mechanical aptitude and trouble-shooting skills
  • Bilingual (English & French)
