Research Associate - Downstream Processing

Main Functions

The Research Assistant works within the Downstream Processing group at the corporate R&D labs of Lallemand Inc (6100 Royalmount avenue, Montreal). Some of the key activities include development, technical transfer and troubleshooting of yeast fractionation processes as well as characterization and application testing of produced extracts. This position reports to the R&D Manager Downstream Processing. The selected individual will be responsible for, but not limited to:

  • Design, plan and conduct laboratory experiments
  • Operate, clean and maintain downstream processing equipment
  • Conduct biochemical and physico-chemical assays
  • Collect and analysis of experimental results
  • Write internal R&D reports and prepare presentations in English
  • Recruit, train and supervise interns
  • Implement and keep up-to-date health and safety measures in the laboratory
  • Ensure chemical and material inventory is up to date
  • Contact equipment suppliers for quotations and repairs
  • Assist in process scale-up and technical transfer to pilot and industrial scale
  • Occasionally required to travel to other Lallemand sites or collaborators around Montreal
  • Travel internationally when needed (up to 10% of the time)

Technical skills


  • Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree with research experience, in biotechnology, food science, biochemistry, microbiology, chemical engineering or other related field
  • Relevant laboratory experience (biochemical and microbiological analyses)
  • Working knowledge of industrial downstream processes to isolate biological components and formulate products, such as extraction techniques, centrifugation, membrane filtration, drying, etc
  • Basic knowledge of microbiology
  • Ability to handle loads (25 kg)

An asset

  • Knowledge of yeast
  • General knowledge of equipment mechanics and electronics
  • Experience supervising staff
  • Bilingual French and English
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
