The ideal candidate will have a strong background in microbiology, fermentation technology or biochemical engineering, with a focus on yeast or microbial fermentation processes in an industrial setting. This role would be expected to spend ~50% of their time traveling to production facilities, primarily in NA but also globally as needed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor and analyze fermentation and other production data continuously to identify trends, patterns, potential issues, and recommend preventive actions.
  • Travel from plant to plant proactively to identify problems and develop solutions to improve operations, safety, quality and efficiency.
  • Be able to travel to the plants with short notice, assist production with troubleshooting, drive root cause analysis investigations and provide timely solutions.
  • Design, coordinate and supervise scaled-down experiments for studying the critical process parameters identified in fermentation and downstream processes to increase quality, consistency, and yield and reduce costs and processing times.
  • Plan, coordinate, and provide onsite support for the scale-up of new process schemes and new yeast strains’ production, ensuring a smooth transition from lab scale to industrial scale.
  • Collaborate with R&D to evaluate and implement new techniques, new devices, new technology aiming for continuous process improvement and optimization for production plants.
  • Prepare technical, lab experiments, technology transfer, plant trials and troubleshooting reports, and techno-economic feasibility assessments for communicating work outcomes and future recommendations.

Technical skills

  • B.S. in Microbiology, chemical engineering, biotechnology, biochemical engineering, or other related fields, M.S. or Ph.D. preferred.
  • Good knowledge of fermentation technology and biochemical engineering principles, theory and practice with special focus on yeast fermentation operations in an industrial setting or a strong interest in acquiring such skills.
  • Experience with process scale-up and technology transfer.
  • Proficient in data analysis and statistical process control.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate results, concepts and ideas.

An asset

  • Good working knowledge of chemical and biochemical process unit operations.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of SCADA, data historian, process control and automation.
  • Familiarity with data science tools such as Python, R, or SAS.

Personal abilities

  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong independent and teamwork abilities.
  • Diligent and persistence
