Research Associate- Synthetic Biology / Microbial Engineering

Main Functions

The Research Associate will join a team improving synthetic biology systems as well as developing novel yeast and bacteria-derived products for use across Lallemand’s business units.   Some of the key activities for this team include testing and optimization of synthetic biology techniques for a range of microbes, genetic and metabolic engineering, heterologous protein expression, protein engineering and purification.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Design, implementation, analysis and reporting of experiments;
  • Developing and validating new methodology to achieve technical goals;
  • Genetic engineering of yeast and bacteria;
  • Lab-scale growth and enzyme assays;
  • Authoring reports and presentations;
  • Training less experienced team members to perform various lab procedures.

Technical skills

Required

  • Demonstrated experience generating high quality data, and managing to a timeline
  • Good troubleshooting skills to deal with technical problems
  • Working knowledge of genetics, gene regulation, and genetic engineering
  • Strong core competency in molecular / synthetic biology
  • M.S. or B.S. /B.A. with 2+ years of experience in biology, genetics, biochemistry, or related field

An asset

  • Familiarity with a range of synthetic biology techniques (e.g. Golden Gate / MoClo, Gibson Assembly)
  • Familiarity with microbial physiology, biochemistry, protein engineering, and metabolic engineering
  • Hands-on experience in the area of bacteria or yeast research
  • Varied educational and lab experiences enabling the development of new approaches
  • Experience with the Geneious and Benchling platforms

  • Desire to work as part of a team in a fast-paced biotech industry setting
  • Ability to work on multiple and simultaneous projects as part of multi-disciplinary team
