Bioinformatics Scientist

Main Functions

The Bioinformatics Scientist will join Mascoma’s Bioinformatics Group, where they will work in interdisciplinary global collaborations to support Lallemand’s diverse product portfolio with a wide variety of standard and custom bioinformatics services, focused around next-generation sequencing, genomics, transcriptomics, and metagenomics in fungi and bacteria. Our work is in support of product development (diversity prospecting, strain engineering), commercial use (strain identification, product application), and IP/regulatory filings. 


You will be responsible for: 

  1. Maintaining and improving existing bioinformatics analysis pipelines, and developing new pipelines as needed.
  2. Responding to requests for bioinformatics support from business units throughout Lallemand, taking ownership of individual requests:
    • Learn and understand the biology, market opportunity, and scientific needs underlying the request;
    • Translate the request into specific bioinformatics deliverables to define project scope;
    • Coordinate any required next-generation sequencing;
    • Execute analytical pipelines and interpret the results to make discoveries about microorganisms;
    • Summarize methods and communicate findings to diverse audiences, which may include: R&D scientists, customers, marketing teams, IP/regulatory teams, and upper management. 

Technical skills


  • MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics, Biology, Computer Science, or closely related field
  • Strong programming expertise in Python, R, and bash
  • Experience with using open-source software tools for genomics (assembly, annotation, alignment, variant calling, comparative genomics, PCA) and transcriptomics analyses (differential expression)
  • Experience with High-Performance Computing (HPC) and remote access to compute resources
  • Familiarity with SQL and accessing data stored in relational databases

An asset

  • Experience building API integrations with third-party platforms
  • Experience with dashboard development (e.g. Tableau, Microsoft Power BI)
  • Experience with automated report generation (e.g. R Markdown)
  • Knowledge of microbial genetics
  • Experience with metagenomics, proteomics, and/or metabolomics
  • Experience with version control and peer code review
  • Experience with cloud storage and computing (Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure)
  • Experience with pipeline engineering and workflow management (e.g. Snakemake, Nextflow)
  • Experience with software package management (e.g. Conda) and containerization (e.g. Docker)
  • Experience with next-generation sequencing platforms (e.g. Illumina, Nanopore, and/or PacBio)

General criteria


  • Must be able to legally work in the United States. Position is compatible with remote work, however candidate must be willing and able to travel and be on site at our New Hampshire facility at least one week per quarter (pending the lifting of state and federal COVID-19 travel restrictions)
