Research Scientist

Main Functions

Engineer proteins and/or metabolic pathways in microbes using strong depth of knowledge and experiences in protein engineering, microbial genetics and physiology. Design and construct protein/pathway libraries, as well as develop and implement novel high-throughput screening methods to facilitate protein/pathway engineering efforts. Carry out energy calculations and simulations for protein engineering purposes. Participate in multi-disciplinarily projects and interact with chemists, biophysicists, and process engineers to deliver high-quality data to help solve complex problems. Independently design, execute and analyze experiments, and report/present on results and progress.

Technical skills

Required

  • Doctorate or Master’s degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field and 3 years experience (or no experience with a Doctorate) as a Research Scientist or related, which must include education or experience with: Protein engineering specialty, including directed evolution and rational design; Design and construct random, semi-rational, and rational protein/pathway libraries; Design and optimization of high-throughput library screening methods; Design and optimization of flow cytometry cell sorting strategies; Heterologous protein expression and purification with FPLC; Small molecule characterization and purification with HPLC, LC-MS; Protein biochemical and biophysical characterizations; Enzyme kinetics, including determination of catalytic parameters; and Structure-based energy calculations and simulations, small molecule docking (such as Charmm, Rosetta).
