Applied Research Scientist

Main Functions

The Applied Research Scientist will join the Lallemand Bio-Ingredients Biotech R&D team working to conduct research on the impact of yeast and yeast extracts in Biotech applications, namely microbial fermentation. The scientist works with significant autonomy to manage R&D projects according to a given procedure, from literature study, design and execution of experiments to  reporting experimental results in reports and to key stakeholders. In close collaboration with the technical, sales, marketing and management team members, the Applied Research Scientist also generates ideas on new commercial products and relevant research topics. The Applied Research Scientist also provides technical support to the sales and marketing team by contributing to the preparation of presentations for new product, presenting in seminars or webinars, and participating in technical meeting with clients. The Research Assistant supervises student in labs related to Biotech projects. Furthermore, the Applied Research Scientist supports in a variety of administrative and non-administrative tasks which may include preparing resources, equipment, materials for the research, in support of the research activities. The Applied Research Scientist works as part of a larger laboratory team reporting to the Process R&D Manager.

 

Specific tasks associated with this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, execute, analyze, and report experiments according to defined objectives and milestones.
  • Specifically, the experiments include microbial fermentations in flask or bio-reactor scale, and development of assays.
  • Literature research pertaining to the projects.
  • Writing R&D reports.
  • Management of R&D projects and communication with stakeholders.
  • Collaboration with Lallemand R&D groups and/or external laboratories
  • Make presentations to the Biotech team and/or external collaborators
  • Train and supervise trainees and ensure the accuracy of the experiments.
  • Ensure a clean and safe environment in the lab.

Technical skills

Required

  • Relevant computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams etc).
  • Experience in R&D project management.
  • 3 years of experience in a relevant field
  • MSc or PhD degree in Food Science, Biochemical engineering, Biotechnology, Microbiology or other relevant degree.
  • Knowledge of microorganisms manufacturing (Yeast, Bacillus, Lactic acid Bacteria, probiotics in general…)

An asset

  • Bilingual (English & French) with good skill in technical report writing.
