Research Scientist- Synthetic Biology / Microbial Engineering

Main Functions

Lallemand conducts its R&D activities not only through internal projects, including at Mascoma LLC, but also in collaboration with many universities and other governmental and private research institutions around the world. Research and development is a major element in successfully identifying and satisfying the needs of the market segments in which Lallemand strives to play an active and leading role.

Mascoma LLC, part of the Corporate R&D business group, is a recognized leader in advanced bioconversion products for use in the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass sources. Mascoma also applies its cuttingedge synthetic biology, analytical chemistry, and fermentation technologies to develop and deliver innovative products across all markets served by Lallemand. Here a few examples of some of the commercial products that have come out of the Mascoma labs:

  • Sourvisiae® a bioengineered ale yeast strain capable of producing lactic acid in sour-style beer production
  • Transferm® Yield+ a yeast strain engineered to express glucoamylase and reduce glycerol in corn ethanol production
  • FiberFerm a bioengineered yeast capable of fermenting xylose and arabinose in cellulosic fuel production
  • SucraMax® a bioengineered yeast built to increase yield for the Brazilian sugarcane ethanol recycle fermentation

The Research Scientist will join a team developing and deploying synthetic biology systems for use in creating novel yeast and bacteria-derived products for use across Lallemand’s business units.  This position is based in Lebanon, NH and will report directly to the R&D Manager.  Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and validating new wet lab methods
  • Design, implementation, analysis and reporting of experiments
  • Genetic engineering of yeast and bacteria
  • Optimizing and managing workflows to meet internal and external requests
  • Training and supervising less experienced team members
  • Authoring reports and presentations

Technical skills


  • Demonstrated experience generating high quality data, and managing to a timeline
  • Good troubleshooting skills to deal with technical problems
  • Genetic engineering of yeast and bacteria
  • Strong core competency in molecular / synthetic biology

An asset

  • Familiarity with microbial physiology, biochemistry, protein engineering, and metabolic engineering
  • Protein/enzyme engineering and expression in microbial hosts
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Geneious and Benchling platforms
  • Familiarity with a range of synthetic biology techniques (e.g. Golden Gate / MoClo, Gibson Assembly)

Personal abilities


  • Ability to work on multiple and simultaneous projects as part of multi-disciplinary teams
  • Desire to work as part of a team in a fast-paced biotech industry setting

An asset

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
