Research Scientist- Protein Engineering / Protein Expression

Main Functions

Mascoma LLC, part of the Corporate R&D business group within Lallemand, is a recognized leader in advanced bioconversion products for use in the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass sources. Mascoma also applies its cuttingedge synthetic biology, analytical chemistry, and fermentation technologies to develop and deliver innovative products across all markets served by Lallemand. Here a few examples of some of the commercial products that have come out of the Mascoma labs:

  • Sourvisiae® a bioengineered ale yeast strain capable of producing lactic acid in sour-style beer production
  • Transferm® Yield+ a yeast strain engineered to express glucoamylase and reduce glycerol in corn ethanol production
  • FiberFerm a bioengineered yeast capable of fermenting xylose and arabinose in cellulosic fuel production
  • SucraMax® a bioeengineered yeast built to increase yield for the Brazilian sugarcane ethanol recycle fermentation

The Research Scientist will join a team developing new enzymes and proteins that will be expressed and manufactured in yeast and bacterial production systems. This position is based in Lebanon, NH. Responsibilities include:

  • Functions in a multi-disciplinary project team developing new proteins;
  • Develops and validates enzymatic assays for standardizing proteins;
  • Engineers microbes to express proteins for evaluation in applications
  • Applies protein engineering techniques to improve new and existing molecules of interest
  • Organizes and supervises R&D and application work related to projects for development of new proteins
  • Maintains the appropriate data and reports on these results;

Technical skills


  • Hands-on experience in the area of bacteria or yeast research


  • enzymatic assay development, heterologous protein expression in microbial hosts, computational protein design, or directed evolution
  • Expertise in one or more of the following: biochemistry, enzymology, or enzyme engineering

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Positive attitude and flexibility
