Research Associate

Main Functions

The Research Associate will join a process & product development team and work in the domain of industrial microbiology and biotechnology, the cornerstone of the Lallemand different businesses.  The selected candidate will report to the Senior R&D Manager, Lallemand Corporate R&D.  Key responsibilities include: supervise day to day operations in process (fermentation) lab, manage R&D projects by planning, organizing and executing experiments related to yeast fermentation and processing, optimization and scale-up, analyze and report results in written and oral format, support technical transfer and process scale-up to commercial scale with occasional travel to production sites or other relevant sites. The Research Associate will work in a dynamic team that requires efficient interactions and communication. Specific tasks associated with this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Design, conduct and coordinate various R&D activities
  • Plan and conduct/supervise fermentation and other project activities in the process lab
  • Train and supervise trainees and ensure the accuracy of the experiments
  • Analyze and report fermentation/experiment results in written format weekly
  • Write monthly R&D reports and other reports regularly
  • Conduct a variety of lab QC analyses and technical procedures when required
  • Develop technical protocols and prepare standard operating procedures (SOPs)
  • Ensure the supplies of chemicals and other materials for the projects in the lab
  • Ensure that the fermenters and related equipment are in good working order
  • Ensure clean and safe environment in the lab
  • Participate in the trouble shootings in the plant and the transfer of R&D results to the plant

 

Technical skills

Required

  • BSc or MSc degree in Fermentation Technology, Biochemical Engineering, Microbiology Biotechnology or relevant discipline with 1-5 years related experience
  • Working knowledge of fermenter operations and fermentation processes
  • Good skill in technical report writing
  • Relevant computer skills (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Minitab, Programming, etc)

An asset

  • Experience in yeast fermentation and processing
  • Mechanical aptitude and trouble-shooting skills
  • Bilingual (English & French)
