Research Associate

Main Functions

The Research Associate – Lactic Solutions will join a team involved in genetic engineering and evaluation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for the production of fuels and will report directly to the Lactic Solutions Project Leader.  The selected individual will apply molecular biology skills to engineer LAB, analyze associated genotypes and phenotypes, conduct lab-scale fermentations as needed to assess phenotypes, and provide documentation of the process and results. The candidate will perform this research in support of company goals and priorities in conjunction with the project leader and other team members, and will assist in solving difficult problems with insight, creativity, and skill.

Research topics include metabolic engineering, heterologous protein expression, classical genetics, directed evolution, and development of strain screens and selections for specific applications.  Tasks associated with this position will include:

  • Designing molecular constructs, cloning, and transformations;
  • Screening assays and enzyme activity;
  • Conducting small scale fermentations;
  • Documenting experimental procedures and results.

Preferred in an ideal candidate:  

Prior experience engineering microorganisms; Experience with bacteria, yeast, or other cell culturing techniques; Experience in small-scale fermentation; Experience with data analysis using Excel, or similar software;  Desire to work as part of a new team in a fast-paced development setting; Ability to complete research and recommend new approaches to solve difficult problems; strong oral and written communication skills

Technical skills

An asset

  • Lab experience with bacteria, yeast, or other cell culturing techniques
  • Experience in cloning, cell transformation, screening or enzyme activity assays, and/or conducting small scale fermentations is desired

Personal abilities


  • Ability to document experimental procedures and results

An asset

  • Ability to work as part of a new team in a fast-paced development setting
