Production Manager

Main Functions

Purpose:   The Production Manager will direct a team of supervisors and operators to plan, schedule, and coordinate production activities to fulfill sales orders, meet inventory requirements, and deliver quality products in a timely fashion. 

Essential Functions: 

  • Forecast production requirements for yeast orders to achieve an optimum utilization of labor resources, equipment, and raw material inputs. Coordinate production and schedule logistics accordingly. 
  • Provide input for the annual facility budget. Operate within established budgetary guidelines. Oversee the reporting of production volume, labor hours, and inventory levels to ensure accuracy. Reconcile production output versus raw materials inputs on a weekly basis. 
  • Hire, train, develop, and evaluate production employees. Take corrective action as necessary in a timely manner and in accordance with company policy. Ensure the safety of employees and maintaining a risk-free environment. Act as a communications liaison for plant management and production personnel. Ensure compliance with current federal, state, and local labor regulations.   
  • Oversee yeast drying and/or fresh yeast packaging lines. 
  • Maintain proper inventory levels and initiate orders of raw materials with Customer Service Representative when necessary. Manage and control department inventory. 
  • Ensuring that all required data entries are made in the ERP system for accounting reports (results, discrepancies, fixed costs); recording transactions as needed. 
  • Strive to optimize productivity (tonnage, raw material utilization, and labor) while maintaining product quality (performance and microbiology) 
  • Provide analysis of technical issues across the production process to maximize quality and minimize downtime. 
  • Implement continuous process and equipment improvements to affect quality, efficiency, and production costs. 
  • Emphasize sanitation and adhering to quality management control systems (MCS).   
  • Facilitate preventative maintenance activities through a coordinated effort with maintenance personnel to minimize lost production time. 
  • Coordinate and communicate with sales and distribution personnel to meet company objectives in customer satisfaction. 
  • Comply with applicable environmental regulations and participate in quality system programs including GMP, HACCP, and ISO. 

Other functions for this position include: 

  • Serve as back-up for the Plant Manager and Production Supervisor functions. 
  • Investigate and resolve customer issues and/or disputes. 
  • Provide direct supervision to plant personnel when assigned rotating “call” duty. 
  • Serve as back-up for Operators and operate equipment to meet production requirements when inadequately staffed. 
  • Ensure efficiency of CIP programs and oversee the general housekeeping of the production department and control room.  

Technical skills

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline required or equivalent knowledge through work experience.
  • Strong organizational skills for the performance of a variety of complex administrative duties. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to successfully negotiate contractual agreements by reading, analyzing, and interpreting complex documents.
  • Technical skills in materials and inventory management, production scheduling, and preventative maintenance.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision and management. A demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others.
  • Working knowledge of GMP, HACCP, Safety, and ISO programs along with basic understanding of pumps, conveyors, valves, PLC’s, and variable frequency drives.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications.

An asset

  • A food science or engineering degree with emphasis in process control is helpful.
  • 10 years of management experience in the Food Industry with expertise in managing food-related operations, especially in yeast, whey, or dairy drying.
