Research associate

Main Functions

The Research Associate will report directly to the Process R&D Manager of Lallemand Bio-Ingredients. The purpose of the Research Associate position is to support the process R&D team by managing research projects. The research associate works mostly independently on assigned projects and can play a supporting role in other projects as well. The support role also extends to lab management in terms of purchasing, maintaining safety protocols and other clerical work. The main responsibilities of the Research Associate are to design, implement, analyze and report process R&D experiments. Performing lab-scale downstream processing experiments (autolysis, separation, drying) and related analysis. Developing and validating new methodology to achieve technical goals. 

The selected individual will be responsible for the following tasks associated with this position (but are not limited):

  • Participate in the development and/or optimization of bioingredient upstream and downstream processes.
  • Execute, and report experiments according to defined objectives and milestones.
  • Write internal R&D reports.
  • Train and supervise trainees and ensure the accuracy of experiments.
  • Prepare and perform sensory evaluations for analysis of food products
  • Collaborate with different departments in the industrialization of processes and products.
  • Ensure a clean and safe environment in the lab.

Technical skills

Required

  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant research or industrial experience in biotechnology, food microbiology or related field.
  • Independent R&D project management experience.
  • Excellent skills in laboratory procedures associated with food science and biotechnology including sterile techniques, sensory analysis, analytical methods for quantification of targeted metabolites.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

An asset

  • Knowledge of specific processing techniques used in the food or biotechnology industries, including fermentation, autolysis, fractionation, spray drying, homogenization, etc.

Personal abilities

Required

  • Demonstrated time management, organization, planning, and record-keeping skills.
  • Adaptability to a fast-pace team-oriented work environment.

An asset

  • Technical aptitude and good troubleshooting skills.
  • Be comfortable with operating large lab/pilot equipment (HPH, autolyzer, dryer).

General criteria
