Research Associate - Bioprocess
Main Functions
The successful candidate will plan, organize, and perform yeast propagation and downstream process activities in conjunction with team members. The candidate will perform this research in support of company goals and priorities in conjunction with research assistant interns and other team members, and will assist in solving difficult problems with insight, creativity, and skill.
Key activities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Developing and/or optimizing fermentation parameters to support process scale-up under industrial conditions;
- Operating 20 L bioreactors employing proper sterile technique handling tasks which include but are not limited to sterilization, CIP, calibration of pumps and probes, and preparation of media;
- Operating downstream processing equipment such as separators, spray-dryers, fluidized bed dryers, filter presses, extruders, or freeze-dryers;
- Coordinating sample analyses with internal and external analytical and QC teams;
- Summarizing experimental outcomes and data, and presenting results in relevant meetings;
- Maintaining a clean and safe lab environment;
- Developing and updating lab SOPs;
- Supervising 1-2 research assistants/interns;
- Independently oversee the design, implementation, collection, analysis, and reporting of experiments;
- Carry out fermentation/bioprocess evaluations of a diversity of microorganisms spanning multiple application sectors;

Technical skills
Required
- MS with 3+ years of laboratory experience in fermentation science, microbial physiology, biochemistry, or related field
- Previous experience with yeast propagation and precision fermentation
- Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects, as part of a team with shared goals
- Be familiar with upstream and downstream industrial fermentation unit operations
An asset
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills
- Experience using data platforms such as Grafana and Benchling
- Previous bioprocess experience with a wide variety of yeast and/or filamentous fungi
- Bilingual (English & French)
